School Sponsorships, camp, fundraisers… A busy year!

127 students sponsored in 2018

In 2018 we sponsored 127 students in the cities of Lusaka, Ndola, and Kapiri Mposhi, and also in the remote villages of Mitenge and Mukonchi.  The cost for these students doubled from 2017, and we’re so grateful that the Lord provided in 2018 for all the school fees and school supplies like shoes, books, uniforms, pens, and paper.   The number of students we are sponsoring in 2019 has grown even more to 175 and God has already supplied for this year too.

First AFSIA Fundraising Dinner a Success!

We were thankful to Calvary Chapel Eastside for allowing us to use the chapel to hold our first ever fundraising dinner in May, where we released our new AFSIA promo film and raised over $17,000 to help fund the erecting of a secondary school building in the village of Mitenge.   With that support we were able to build on top of the foundation laid the previous year, and the walls were finished, leaving the roof and school furnishings to be the major projects for 2019.

Many village families are really looking forward to having a secondary school in their village so that their children do not have to leave home to continue their education, putting them at risk at the young ages of 13-18.  Once the school is opened, we will also be sending a pastor to teach regularly and hold a church service every Sunday in the building. The building will also be a community meeting place and available for a visiting medical clinic.

second annual AFSIA garage sale

Another large fundraising event we held in September was the annual AFSIA/Calvary Chapel Eastside Garage Sale and we were able to raise about $7500 through the day-of sales, Craigslist sales, donations, and consignment sales afterwards!!   We’re so grateful for the help from the CCE members who made so many donations of used goods to sell and helped to set up, man, and clean up after the garage sale.

For 89 of our students to go to camp, we needed to supply them with shoes, blankets, dishes, medical supplies, some basic toiletries, and also transport them there and back.   So, the total cost of sending them to camp was around $9000.   The garage sale was able to raise most of that cost, and we appreciate the church allowing AFSIA to hold this event each year in the garage.  TMI Boot Camp really is an effective means to disciple youth for Christ.
